President Obama delivered his first public remarks after the presidential debate at Sloan’s Lake outside of Denver on Thursday morning.

“When I got onto the stage, I met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be Mitt Romney,” Obama said. “But it couldn’t have been Mitt Romney because the real Mitt Romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. The fellow on stage last night said he didn’t know anything about that.”

The president continued to list the Republican candidate’s debate answers that struck him as inconsistent with his campaign thus far.

“The man on stage last night, he does not want to be held accountable for the real Mitt Romney’s decisions and what he’s been saying for the last year, and that’s because he knows full well that we don’t want what he’s been selling for the last year,” Obama continued as supporters in the crowd cheered.

“If you want to be president, you owe the American people the truth.”

He headed straight from Colorado to a similar rally in Madison, Wis.

Mitt Romney spoke to the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) in Denver on Thursday. His sons Tag, Craig and Josh appeared on stage with him.

Romney will attend a campaign event with Paul Ryan and country singer Trace Adkins at Augusta Expoland in Fishersville, Va., Thursday evening.

Rasmussen Reports: Romney leads in Colorado

Despite a troubling week for Mitt Romney’s campaign, he is leading Obama a new  Rasmussen poll out Tuesday shows him leading  47 to 45 percent in Colorado.

A poll released by the Denver Post on Sunday showed Obama leading by, “a single, statistically insignificant percentage point in a poll with a 4-point margin of error.”

Thousands packed onto the Aurora Courthouse lawn Sunday night to honor the victims of Friday’s shooting.

President Obama visited Aurora, Colo., on Sunday,  just two days after the shooting massacre he called a “tragedy that reminds us of all the ways that we are united as one American family.”

The president offered sympathy and comfort to surviving victims and mourning families Sunday afternoon at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center, one of the facilities where victims were sent after the Friday shooting, which left 12 people dead and dozens injured.

“Such violence, such evil is senseless,” Obama said Friday about the shooting. “There are going to be other days for politics; this, I think, is a day for prayer and reflection.”

Bill and Hilary Clinton in May 1999 visited Columbine High School in Jefferson County, Colo., one month after the school shooting that happened there on April 20, 1999.

The Clintons’ visit was met with loud cheers of resilience in a quasi-pep rally at Columbine. Obama’s last-minute Sunday visit was one of quiet console and healing for the shaken community that looks toward overcoming Friday’stragedy.
